McDonald's wants to expand the chicken offerings on its menu and its plan to do so appears to include a new version of an item that's been gone for years: snack wraps.
The company announced Wednesday it plans to offer the McCrispy in nearly all markets around the world by the end of 2025, and it wants to expand McCrispy into wraps and tenders as well.
McDonald's said in a news release that the size of the company's chicken business is currently on par with beef, and it wants to continue to "aggressively expand through billion-dollar equities" such as McNuggets, McChicken, McCrispy and McSpicy.
According to the product description on McDonald's website, the McCrispy is a "southern-style friend chicken sandwich" topped with crinkle-cut pickles and served on a toasted, buttered potato roll.
Expansion:McDonald's plans to open roughly 10,000 new locations, with 50,000 worldwide by 2027
McDonald's wants to open additional 10,000 restaurants in next four years
The company also announced plans to open an additional 10,000 restaurants around the world over the next four years, in what will be the fastest period of growth in the company's history.
According to the press release from McDonald's, which is already the world's largest burger chain, the company is targeting to have 50,000 restaurants by 2027.
The company said it already operates at least 40,000 restaurants globally.
Of the new restaurants, 900 will be in the U.S., while 1,900 will be international, company operated and franchised stores in Canada, Germany, the U.K. and Australia, per the Associated Press.
McDonald's also sets lofty goals for its app
McDonald's also announced plan to increase its 90-day active user base for its rewards app, MyMcDonald's Rewards, from 150 million to 250 million by 2027.
"Mobile ordering is a popular and growing choice for customers, with hundreds of millions of mobile orders recorded during the third quarter of 2023," the company said in the news release.
In order to keep up with the demand for mobile ordering, McDonald's also plans to expand its U.S. pilot of "Ready on Arrival," across its top six markets by 2025.
According to the news release, the initiative "enables crew members to begin assembling a customer's mobile order prior to their arrival at the restaurant to expedite service and elevate customer satisfaction."
