FULTON, Mo. (AP) — A Texas man was fatally shot and two deputies were wounded during a traffic stop in central Missouri, authorities said Monday.
The Callaway County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that a deputy initiated a traffic stop around 3:35 a.m. Monday on Interstate 70. A second deputy arrived a short time later.
Deputies learned that the driver, a 37-year-old man from Texas, had several felony warrants. A short time later, deputies notified dispatchers that the man was resisting arrest, then reported shots fired.
The driver who had been pulled over was pronounced dead at the scene. One deputy underwent surgery and was in critical condition. The other was in stable condition.
Authorities haven’t released the names of anyone involved or other details about the shootings, including who shot whom. A phone message was left with the sheriff’s office seeking additional information.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s division of drug and crime control will investigate the shooting.
