The Los Angeles Chargers announced they will be inducting Antonio Gates to the franchise's Hall of Fame, and the former tight end was emotional when he was surprised with the news.
In a video posted on social media, the Chargers had Gates be a special guest for a team meeting. Head coach Brandon Staley shared a video montage of some of Gates best moments with the franchise before introducing him to the team. Gates began talking about it was a "no brainer" to come speak with the team, but that wasn't the real surprise.
Gates was then told he would be inducted to the team's Hall of Fame, and that's when the waterworks came.
It will be well-deserved honor for the lifelong Charger, as he played 16 season with the franchise after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent in 2003. He ended his career as the franchise's all-time leader in career receptions (955), receiving yards (11,841) and touchdown catches (116). His touchdown catches are the most by a tight end in NFL history. Gates was an eight-time Pro Bowl section and made five All-Pro teams.
He's eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2024.
Gates's ceremony with the Chargers will be on Dec. 10, during halftime of Los Angeles' Week 14 matchup against the Denver Broncos.
